Stunning beaches

Winterton beach has the wonderful advantage of a vast expanse of soft sand which is backed onto by the rolling dunes of the National Nature Reserve.

The stretch of sand between the dunes and the sea gives a lovely uncrowded and open feel to it, and also means you can spread yourself out without being on top of other people.

Beautiful location

Some historians believe that the village was the seasonal “tun”, meaning settlement, of farmers from East Somerton who were fishermen during the winter.

By Norman times it had become a separate village and is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Wintretona or Wintretuna.

Discover the area

Alongside the beach is the Winterton Dunes National Nature Reserve which is managed by Natural England and is home to the rare Natterjack Toad which breeds in the shallow pools behind the main dune ridge.

Just north of Winterton a colony of grey seals live and can be regularly seen on the beach at Horsey. From the end of October to February is pupping season and with the beach closed off the fluffy white pups can be seen from designated viewing platforms on the dunes.

It’s one of those Norfolk beaches that doesn’t matter whether the tide is in or out as there is abundant soft sand whatever the time of the tide

Winterton beach

The seals in Norfolk are truly one of the county’s most special sights to see.

Without any doubt, it is an incredible WOW factor and one that you must see when in Norfolk.
